How does energy production affect the environment?

The generation of energy from conventional sources has a huge impact on the environment. That is why renewable energies are presented as the sustainable and ecological alternative that ensures the care of the planet.

Today electrical energy is a necessity of the first order and we cannot do without it. The imperative need to generate electricity in any way entails a catastrophic environmental impact worldwide, it is for this reason that we must obtain energy in a sustainable way for a future that is respectful with the environment.

In the past, to generate energy, wood and coal were used. As the big cities grew, greater production was required since the demand was also increasing. It is in this context that more productive and also more damaging sources of energy for the planet, such as oil and some others, begin to be used.

The sustained use over time and increasingly increasing oil, among others, derives from this current situation of energy unsustainability and a high polluting component.

In the next point we will review which are the main sources of energy generation that are most harmful to the environment:

Thermal power plants: due to the burning of fossil fuels, such as coal or oil, they generate CO2 emissions, causing air pollution and resulting in a global greenhouse effect and acid rain.
Nuclear energy: nuclear power plants have the problem of producing highly polluting radioactive waste that is difficult and expensive to treat.
Combined cycles: being fed with natural gas, the greatest environmental impact is combustion, exploitation of the deposits, water and soil contamination. Although also an impact on the ecosystems through which the gas pipelines pass.
Biomass energy: in addition to the environmental impact of combustion and atmospheric pollution, we must add a loss of vegetation, destruction of biodiversity, soil erosion, decreased water retention, etc …
Wind energy: the installation of large wind farms has an environmental impact that falls directly on the local fauna and the impoverishment of the soil.
Hydraulic power: the two main problems in the construction of reservoirs and dams are the fragmentation and loss of habitats, and the disturbance to flora and fauna.

Less polluting alternatives

This energy unsustainability produced by the finite capacity of resources such as oil and society’s awareness of its high pollution, has led human beings to the use of other more sustainable and infinite energy sources such as renewable ones.

The continuation of the rhythm of energy use that we currently have is higher than the planet’s capacity to produce raw material, which we need to avoid, in such a way that following this same consumption step would mean the near depletion of the main sources of energy that we currently know.

Hence, renewable alternatives arise such as:

Solar energy, from the Sun.
Wind energy, coming from the wind.
Hydraulic or hydroelectric energy, derived from water currents or natural waterfalls.
Geothermal energy, arising from the use of the internal and natural heat of the Earth.
Tidal energy, resulting from the movement of water in the rise and fall of the tides.
Blue or osmotic energy, also from water but in this case it is obtained from the difference in the concentration of salt between seawater and river water.

There are more and more places where structures are installed for the generation of one of these renewable energies mentioned above. Although at the beginning the installation requires a large investment, in the long term all are advantages.

First, because you consume renewable energy and therefore respectful of the environment, in such a way that you contribute to the sustainability and improvement of the planet; and second, because the economic savings are real. Over the years, the initial investment is completely amortized and the final price on electricity bills decreases.

But the change in the use of conventional to renewable energy will not prosper if we do not change our rhythm of life for a more sustainable model not only energetically, but in all aspects that can contribute to the improvement of a planet increasingly damaged by our consumption irresponsible raw materials.

At Nabalía Energía we already offer you the possibility of starting to enjoy a more responsible consumption of energy and for this we offer you renewable alternatives. Don’t wait and join the sustainable change.
